Tornado Hits NTT, Damages Schools, Houses
TEMPO.CO, Kupang - At least eight houses and three school buildings in Sikka regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province, were heavily damaged after being buffeted by a tornado on Sunday (15/1).
The tornado has also forced residents whose houses were damaged to be evacuated to their neighbors’ houses that are not affected.
Martinus Nong, one of the residents affected, said the tornado, which was accompanied by a heavy rain, suddenly battered their houses; thus, they had no time to rescue their belongings, which are now buried in the debris.
"All our possessions were damaged because of the tornado,” he said.
As of now, no aids have been distributed by the local government for the victims. Officials from Sikka social agency have been at disaster scene to collect data of the victims and houses damaged by the tornado.
As time of writing, the Sikka Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) cannot be reached yet for comments.
